Can’t Stanza No More

Admit it, aren’t there some songs you just hate?  For me, certain songs are the pop music equivalent of chalk on a blackboard — not only do they make me instinctively lunge for the volume control but they make me question the planetary origin of anyone who liked them. Listen and see if you agree, then share your own songs-gone-wrong.

LISTEN •  “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple (1972)

LISTEN •  “Hot Blooded” by Foreigner (1978)

LISTEN •  “Making Love Out of Nothing At All” by Air Supply (1983)

LISTEN •  “Get Back” by The Beatles (1969)

LISTEN •  “Hotel California” by The Eagles (1977)

LISTEN •  “Tempted by the Fruit of Another” by Squeeze (1981)

LISTEN •  “We’re An American Band” by Grand Funk Railroad (1973)

LISTEN •  “Dream On” by Aerosmith (1973)

LISTEN •  “Windy” by The Association (1967) — still nauseating after 45 years.

I think it would have to be Stairway to Heaven if you go back further Rock The Boat and Shake Your Booty

  2. Craig says:

Yes, Stairway almost made my list too, but I had to stop somewhere. Rock the Boat! You’re right, Lester, a song to make one seasick.

I have to agree that most of these are instant radio button triggers, though I can stand “Dream On” and even “Windy” at times. “Windy” is a high school basketball team bus memory, I think. Vaguely nostalgic (two seasons on the basketball team was my one attempt to “fit in” in high school). But what’s wrong with “Get Back?” Sure, the Beatles had some clunkers, but I consider that a great pop record. I turn it up!

“Stairway” was actually not a bad song at birth (if you like Led Zep at all), but it has long since become an overplayed cliche. So it goes.

Hi Bruce, thanks for visiting. Maybe “Get Back” has more life in it if you turn the volume up, but for me that’s like putting Tobasco on Cheez Whiz. You should check out the links to the YouTube videos for “Get Back” and the other songs, which constitutes the real entertainment value of this post!

Oh–Windy–oh what a god awful song…I turned the channel when it was new and I’d do the same today. Luckily I have not heard it in years…thanks for the reminder! I hope it’s not stuck in my for days.
