Across the Universe

If you ever wondered what the entire universe looks like, I can refer you to some stunning video illustrations, including this one.  One thing to keep in mind when viewing simulations like this is that your point-of-view zooms around at impossibly high speeds, far faster than anything even Star Trek writers dared to consider.  So allow some artistic license.

In 1911, Albert Einstein applied his theory of general relativity to calculate how gravity bends light rays.  One hundred years later — thanks to new satellite observations, extensions of his theories and computing power — we have a much better appreciation of our place in the cosmos.  Now, if we can only get this living-together-peacefully thing down, Einstein might think we accomplished something.

Five Predictions for 2011

The start of a new year seems to turn everyone into a fortune-teller.  So not to disappoint:

  • The last prediction in this list will turn out to be wrong.
  • 2011 will be the 24th consecutive year with repeated digits, and 2012 will be the 25th.  Enjoy it while it lasts — 2013 will have four unique digits.
  • Someone will predict that [Disaster D] will strike [Location L] on [Time T] causing [Consequence Q] and that person will no doubt be [Religious Fanatic X].
  • Most of us will get a little older.  Life will get better for some but not for others.  Sadly, the gap between the haves and have-nots will increase.  Some will wring their hands, others will shove them in their pockets.  Several will hand over their wealth to help.
  • The first prediction in this list will turn out to be right.

As I was consulting my oracle for these predictions, I discovered this page (which I predict you will enjoy), a concise and compelling photo-essay of the flow of time.  If nothing else, writing this blog has led me to some rewarding reading.
