Entrance to Union Station (Brownsville)

The history of Union Station in Brownsville has been covered extensively by the ruins-photography site Abandoned by Sherman Cahal — I will not repeat the information found there. Visually, I like the seams in the granite archway and the prominent shield at the apex of the arch — but what I like best are the iron letters that spell out UNION STATION.
Unfortunately, the lettering is hard to distinguish from the iron bars and salmon-red panels upon which the letters are mounted. (Click on the closeup for a larger view of the lettering.) And the entrance has been so heavily painted that its former grandeur struggles to emerge. I did the best I could to restore some clarity to the image.
It surprises me that the gothic light fixtures on either side of the archway have not been ripped down by derelicts and sold for scrap. Perhaps the credit goes to the Brownsville Police, to whom I tipped my cap as I walked around taking these photos.
