Correspondence

I am lucky enough to have received, and then to have saved, much of what Lawrence wrote to me in the late 60s and 70s.  These bits of writings are little treasures.  Even early on, they reveal his thinking and his characteristic approach to life.  I admired and envied his sophistication in marshalling his thoughts and expressing his feelings — he was far ahead of me in that regard.

This card from 1968 is the first item I received from Lawrence.  He was the editor of the school newspaper at the time, and I was its cartoonist.  I don’t know if Lawrence handed out any other Christmas cards — I know I did not — and I don’t recall why Lawrence called that year a “waste.”  It may have had something to do with events like the My Lai massacre, the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy, and the election of Richard Nixon.  Or it may have been more personal.

I think this card marked the start of our friendship.  – CHC

Christmas Card 1968

La Plume (1973)

Dear Craig,

Ah to be found at last.  I would have written much sooner, but I stupidly threw away the envelope with your address.  I too was about to write c/o your home address.  It was any way a rare pleasure to read your essay on writing of a couple of letters back.  Its pleasure grows with each reading.

So many things have happened since I last wrote — I graduated from school, spent many hourse and much energy looking for work for next year and finally did.  My mother and my sister came up for my graduation.  I got a car and my driver’s license and my Connecticut No-Fault Auto Insurance and the longest sore throat I can remember (7 days) and yes, I came back to Kamp Kewanee.

I will be working next year at Suffield Academy — it is a private boys’ high school as Director of Music.  Along with my position as Musical Director of the Plainville Choral Society.  They are both part-time positions, so I will have some time to myself and still plenty of money to live on.  My needs are simple.

Well this class is nearly over and I must go to my next activity.  Please write soon.  One more thing — I miss you and think of you often.

Larry
