1 October 1971

You have lifted me up
O september
and set me down

the red and golden
ecstasies
and the rhythmless
green of grass

and in the darkness,
the quiet of the running brook
as the moon shone
through the trees.

The days
O september
are spent

You have come and gone
so quietly
whose days were long
and nights were heaven sent.
