{"id":9873,"date":"2015-01-01T00:01:48","date_gmt":"2015-01-01T05:01:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/?p=9873"},"modified":"2022-08-01T07:43:05","modified_gmt":"2022-08-01T11:43:05","slug":"thoughts-at-large-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/2015\/01\/thoughts-at-large-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts at Large: 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u2022 I once had a one-man band, but I split up due to creative differences.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 In theory, it is the center of the electorate who should sway the outcome of elections, just as Anthony Kennedy often has the final say on Supreme Court decisions.\u00a0 But it is not that way in practice.\u00a0 Of the <a href=\"http:\/\/elections.nytimes.com\/2014\/results\/house\">435 races for the U.S. House of Representatives<\/a> in 2014, only 10 were decided by a margin of 2% or less.\u00a0 The winner had 80% or more of the vote in 35 of the races, and the seat was uncontested in 32 others.\u00a0 You would think voters in the center would be outraged at such imbalances &#8212; but if they were, they would no longer be in the center, would they?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 It stands to reason and it sits down to argue.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Some may recall the post on <a href=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/2014\/03\/regrets\/\">regrets<\/a> I wrote a while ago.\u00a0 It dealt with my inability to let go of mistakes I made and stupid things I did in the past.\u00a0 I have recently come to terms with at least part of my regret.\u00a0 Because I entered grade school early, I was almost a year younger than my junior high and high school classmates.\u00a0 So, many of the things I did to embarass myself in front of them had to do with the fact that I was younger and more immature than they were.\u00a0 And I still am.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The U.S. Postal Service recently honored NBA basketball star Wilt Chamberlain on a postage stamp.\u00a0 The late Mr. Chamberlain was best known for being the only man to score 100 points in a basketball game and for claiming to have had sex with 20,000 women.\u00a0 He endorsed Richard Nixon for President.\u00a0 He had an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2001\/10\/07\/magazine\/the-last-seduction.html\">18-karat gold-lined triangular bathtub<\/a>.\u00a0 I have never been a big basketball fan.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The evolutionary purpose of the round cheeks on our faces is to prolong the time that our tears carry their emotional signals to our lovers and friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Dear CIA.\u00a0 I know you&#8217;re reading this, so just to let you know: if you ever want me to confess, you don&#8217;t need to waterboard me.\u00a0 Just make me watch <em>Fox News<\/em>, <em>Dr. Phil<\/em> and <em>Good Morning America<\/em> over and over until I can&#8217;t stand it anymore.\u00a0 It should only take a few hours.\u00a0 But I should warn you: John McCain is right &#8212; I will be so empty-headed after such torture that whatever I tell you will be worthless.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 I have always wanted to write a post that reveals <del>a lot of the words I crossed-out, so my readers can see<\/del> what I was really thinking <del>before I edited it<\/del>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 If there&#8217;s one good thing about getting a cold, it&#8217;s being able to reach those low registers and say &#8220;Hello Baby&#8221; to your woman in your best Barry White imitation.\u00a0 Guys, you gotta try it sometime.\u00a0 You might want to catch a cold more often.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewforum.org\/2012\/12\/18\/global-religious-landscape-exec\/\">One-third of the earth&#8217;s population<\/a> identifies as Christian.\u00a0 Almost one-quarter are Muslim, one-fifth are Hindu or Buddhist, one-sixth are unaffiliated\u00a0\u00a0 All of us believe that what we believe is true.\u00a0 We all can&#8217;t be right of course, yet we irrationally conclude that the rest of the world &#8212;
