{"id":932,"date":"2011-05-17T23:08:33","date_gmt":"2011-05-18T03:08:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/?p=932"},"modified":"2022-08-01T07:43:23","modified_gmt":"2022-08-01T11:43:23","slug":"photographic-memory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/2011\/05\/photographic-memory\/","title":{"rendered":"Photographic Memory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-949\" title=\"View from Vanport Copyright 2001 CHCollins\" src=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/vanpt-yesterday-railway.jpg\" alt=\"View from Vanport Copyright 2001 CHCollins\" width=\"484\" height=\"485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/vanpt-yesterday-railway.jpg 605w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/vanpt-yesterday-railway-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/vanpt-yesterday-railway-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I&#8217;m a casual &#8220;fine art&#8221; photographer.\u00a0 Here &#8220;fine art&#8221; means that no one else thinks it is art, save for other fine art photographers.\u00a0 (The value I add is the composition.\u00a0 Or so I say.)\u00a0 In any event, the subjects I like to shoot include factories, bridges, buildings, railroads and other totems of urban America.\u00a0 So naturally, I was concerned when my rights as a citizen to take pictures in public places seemed threatened in the wake of 9\/11.<\/p>\n<p>When the Patriot Act was passed, there was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abovetopsecret.com\/forum\/thread182806\/pg1\">a lot of talk<\/a> about new restrictions on what photographers may shoot.\u00a0 But it turns out the Act itself <a href=\"http:\/\/www.krages.com\/phoright.htm\">says nothing about photography<\/a>.\u00a0 What restrictions did arise were based on misinformed, misapplied home-grown justice and the consequent self-censorship by photographers, out of fear of the former.\u00a0 The cop eyeing you suspiciously, as if you were scouting terrorist targets, has a badge and a gun, and you have a camera.\u00a0 You want to keep your camera.<\/p>\n<p>I clearly recall news stories from the 1960s and 70s chiding the   U.S.S.R. when it arrested its own people for taking photos near   government facilities.\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;Only in the Soviet Union!&#8221;\u00a0 we Americans said,   in our usual self-congratulatory manner.\u00a0 Now, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pixiq.com\/contributors\/248\">them is us<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2011\/05\/13\/136171366\/this-is-the-police-put-down-your-camera\">recent story<\/a> on NPR described how police dealt with a city bus passenger who used her cellphone to record them making an arrest:<\/p>\n<h5><em>&#8220;One of the officers told me to turn off my phone, because I was  recording them.\u00a0 I said no.\u00a0 And then she grabbed me and  pulled me off the bus to the cop car, which was behind the bus.&#8221;<\/em><\/h5>\n<h5><em>The  police erased the video from Fitchette&#8217;s phone. She was handcuffed and  spent the next two hours in the back of a squad car before she was  released.
