{"id":8926,"date":"2014-08-04T20:49:00","date_gmt":"2014-08-05T00:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/?p=8926"},"modified":"2022-08-01T07:43:07","modified_gmt":"2022-08-01T11:43:07","slug":"thoughts-at-large-20","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/2014\/08\/thoughts-at-large-20\/","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts at Large: 20"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u2022 I want some rock band, any band, anywhere, to write and perform a hit song with the word &#8220;London&#8221; in the title, so I no longer have to listen to the song &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/EfK-WX2pa8c?t=19s\">London Calling<\/a>&#8221; every time an American news program airs a story about Great Britain.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Much of what people consider entertainment falls into the realm of <em>spectacle<\/em>.\u00a0 Circus acts are pure spectacle, but many other performed arts routinely incorporate <em>spectacle<\/em> to the extent that it not only competes with but defines the art &#8212; consider rock concerts, operas, dance troupes, costume dramas and action-hero films.\u00a0 I have never been much impressed by <em>spectacle<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Attention All Hipsters: your food trucks are OK and all those micro-brew beers are OK, but I still want you to get off my lawn.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 P.S. to Hipsters:\u00a0 Calm down.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t have a lawn.\u00a0 I was being metaphorical.\u00a0 And a little self-deprecating.\u00a0 Dude, you&#8217;re so <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/katienotopoulos\/how-to-eat-at-a-hipster-restaurant\">serious<\/a> about everything and stuff.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 My wife is my khaleesi, with a power that is hers alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 When I was a boy, I had a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FixKukM-1bY\">reel-to-reel tape recorder<\/a>.\u00a0 To identify my tapes, I would get out <a href=\"http:\/\/johnkanzler.wordpress.com\/2010\/10\/31\/interview-with-a-typewriter-part-three\/\">my typewriter<\/a>, type numbers on an index card, color the numbers with markers of different colors, punch out the numbers with a single-hole paper punch, then glue the little numbers on both sides of each reel, plus a matching one for the white boxes.\u00a0 If you were to see my storage room today, you would take heart &#8212; no better evidence that obsessive-compulsive behavior does not have to last a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Speaking of obsessive-compulsive behavior: there seems to be competition among the faithful to determine the shortest sentence in the Christian Bible.\u00a0 &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jesus_wept\">Jesus wept<\/a>&#8221; is the pat answer, but others argue for &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crosswalk.com\/faith\/bible-study\/the-shortest-verse-in-the-new-testament.html\">And the second<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 Whatever!\u00a0 (Collins 8:4).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 There needs to be a name for the things that there needs to be a name for.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 We routinely have bears and coyotes wandering the area where we live.\u00a0 Others &#8212; like the residents of Avenue D in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofrochester.gov\/article.aspx?id=8589955092\">Rochester, New York<\/a> &#8212; have to deal with drug dealers and drive-by shootings where they live.\u00a0 What would you choose, if you could?\u00a0\u00a0 What does that say about ability to choose, happenstance, individual effort and personal responsibility?\u00a0 What does that say about right-wing mythology, where every man is supposedly self-made and has god-given ability to rise above his or her situation?<\/p>\n<p>The difference between Left and Right is the locus of control &#8212; the Right would place it in the individual, the Left in social alliances.\u00a0 But the essential similarity of Left and Right is in their illusion of control.\u00a0 Not-in-control is the reality of our existence but, ironically, has no political advocates.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 If saying &#8220;Jesus&#8221; doesn&#8217;t work the first time you are struggling to open a stubborn bottle or jar, try &#8220;Jesus Christ.&#8221;\u00a0 That extra syllable often does the trick.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 I may not recall the date that George W.
