{"id":447,"date":"2011-01-10T22:21:57","date_gmt":"2011-01-11T03:21:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/?p=447"},"modified":"2022-08-01T07:43:25","modified_gmt":"2022-08-01T11:43:25","slug":"the-second-amend-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/2011\/01\/the-second-amend-it\/","title":{"rendered":"The Second: Amend It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen.\u00a0 For your consideration, here to my right, I show you a nut.\u00a0 Obvious nut case,\u00a0 just look at him.\u00a0 And on my left, this fine example of a gun.\u00a0 [Handles gun.]\u00a0 This gun is semi-automatic &#8212; which simply means it fires bullets faster than anyone can count.\u00a0 Excellent, as guns go!<\/p>\n<p>Now, Ladies and Gentlemen, I ask, is there anyone here in the audience who would say, hand this gun, this semi-automatic weapon, to the nut on my right?\u00a0 No?\u00a0 Please, anyone, don&#8217;t be shy.\u00a0 [Pause.]\u00a0 I don&#8217;t see any hands&#8230;\u00a0 Oh, come on, you all have arms! [Twitters from audience.]\u00a0 Raise your arms and show your hands, please.<\/p>\n<p>OK, still no hands.\u00a0 So&#8230; if you don&#8217;t want nuts like this to have guns, let me ask: why aren&#8217;t you doing anything about it?\u00a0 Like, changing our laws &#8212; I&#8217;m just saying.\u00a0 The government <em>could<\/em> require you to take a psychological exam before you buy a gun.\u00a0 Together, we could agree to do this.\u00a0 Or is the prospect that someone (some liberal do-gooder no doubt) might &#8220;evaluate&#8221; you too scary a proposition for you?\u00a0 Which would be worse &#8212; to let nuts have guns or subject yourself to a mental evaluation?\u00a0 You would rather let people die by the hand of a nut with a gun as &#8220;the price we all pay for freedom&#8221;, is that it?<\/p>\n<p>OK, I hear some folks in the audience saying, &#8220;Second Amendment!\u00a0 Second Amendment!&#8221;\u00a0 Yes, our Constitution says (and our Supreme Court affirms) that the people&#8217;s right to bear arms shall not be infringed.\u00a0 So I ask you, Ladies and Gentlemen: what is more important?\u00a0 For nuts to have guns?\u00a0 Or for the Second Amendment to stand as is, as interpreted?<\/p>\n<p>On my right is this nut, on my left this gun, and in front of me, the Second Amendment.\u00a0 [Cheers from some of the audience.]\u00a0 Please remember that the United States Constitution itself spells out a method by which we can amend it.\u00a0 Neither the Second Amendment or the Constitution is cast in stone, like a gravestone &#8212; we can change it if we want.\u00a0 We have done it before: alcohol sales were prohibited by amendment and restored by amendment.\u00a0 It is up to us, patriotic people that we are, and those we elect to office, to do our best to keep nuts and guns apart.\u00a0 We are not powerless &#8212; we can propose an amendment to the Second Amendment.\u00a0 If thirty-eight state legislatures were to ratify such an amendment, it would become part of the United States Constitution, as much a part of it as the First, Second, Fourteenth or any other of our twenty-seven Amendments.<\/p>\n<p>Here is one possible wording for it:<\/p>\n<p><em>The Second Amendment shall not be construed to deny Congress the power to regulate the possession and use of lethal weapons, where such regulation serves to ensure the safety and general welfare of the People as set forth in the Preamble to this Constitution.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ladies and Gentlemen, please, please.\u00a0 Let me finish.\u00a0 Please.\u00a0 [Some in the audience walk out of the room, noisily.\u00a0 One man stands up and aims.]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen.\u00a0 For your consideration, here to my right, I show you a nut.\u00a0 Obvious nut case,\u00a0 just look at him.\u00a0 And on my left, this fine example of a gun.\u00a0 [Handles gun.]\u00a0 This gun is semi-automatic &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/2011\/01\/the-second-amend-it\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-447","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-commentary"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/447","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=447"}],"version-history":[{"count":24,"href":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/447\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":2134,"href":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/447\/revisions\/2134"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=447"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=447"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=447"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
