{"id":35512,"date":"2025-11-21T18:45:43","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T23:45:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/?p=35512"},"modified":"2025-11-22T10:49:29","modified_gmt":"2025-11-22T15:49:29","slug":"what-price-eggs-benedict","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/2025\/11\/what-price-eggs-benedict\/","title":{"rendered":"What Price Eggs Benedict?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For whatever reason (actually, I know the reason &#8212; it&#8217;s called <em>Hollandaise<\/em>), my favorite breakfast out is Eggs Benedict, assuming it doesn&#8217;t stray far from the classic recipe.<\/p>\n<p>Which begs the question: what exactly <em>is<\/em> Eggs Benedict?\u00a0 There are as many variations on the dish as there are cover versions of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whosampled.com\/John-Lennon\/Imagine\/covered\/\">Imagine<\/a>&#8221; &#8212; probably more.\u00a0 But the essentials are: a\u00a0fluffy pair of poached eggs carefully ladled onto a slice of ham (typically Canadian bacon) blanketing an English muffin, with the entirety treated to a spoon-bath of Hollandaise.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, a dish that emerges from a visit to the day spa.<\/p>\n<p>You can find any number of accounts how Eggs Benedict got its name and recipe (here is <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/19981201223133\/http:\/\/www.echonyc.com\/~jkarpf\/eggs\/feedback.html#lemuel\">one of them<\/a>) but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AK3gB7DpaM0\">that&#8217;s not important right now<\/a>.\u00a0 What really distinguishes Eggs Benedict from other offerings on the breakfast\/brunch menu is how damn <em>expensive<\/em> it is.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, Eggs Benedict costs at least twice as much as the basic two-eggs-your-way plus toast, bacon and home fries.\u00a0 I assume this is because Hollandaise sauce isn&#8217;t something that Jake the Short-Order Cook can scrape off a griddle like every other item &#8212; not to say that some overambitious truck-stop hasn&#8217;t tried it.<\/p>\n<p>Upscale restaurants treat Eggs Benedict as an especially profitable offering: the chef may add <a href=\"https:\/\/firstwatch.com\/menu\/florentine-benedict\">spinach<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/firstwatch.com\/menu\/smoked-salmon-benedict\">salmon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.villagetavern.com\/items\/crab-cake-benedict\">crab<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/kaiwagyu.com\/luxurious-lobster-eggs-benedict-with-caviar\/\">lobster or caviar<\/a> to justify a loftier price.\u00a0 I could easily see the <a href=\"https:\/\/guide.michelin.com\/us\/en\/texas\/houston_2986624\/restaurant\/le-jardinier-houston\">one-star<\/a> La Jardinier in Houston offering an Eggs Benedict with Moon Rock Truffle for some obscene three-digit figure, assuming they were able to source some lunar dust from the NASA space center nearby. It would be a first in space-to-table cuisine.<\/p>\n<p>In real life, La Jardinier&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lejardinier-houston.com\/menus\">current menu<\/a> features pork-belly Benedict, Mornay sauce, roasted squash and brioche for a sky-high <strong>$48<\/strong>.\u00a0 That&#8217;s child&#8217;s-play pricing for a Michelin-star establishment.<\/p>\n<p>It goes to show, you can find something called Eggs Benedict for just about whatever you want to pay.\u00a0 Here is my survey of current Eggs Benedict prices, local and national, from low to high&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The lowest price I&#8217;ve found is at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecafepapillon.com\/miami-beach-menu#rec1143600356\">Cafe Papillon<\/a> in Miami, where the nondescript No. 57 costs only <strong>$9.99<\/strong>.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not vouching for it, but you can&#8217;t beat the price.\u00a0 Cafe Papillon might well be that over-ambitious, griddle-scraping diner I referred to earlier, but who knows?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-35567 size-full\" style=\"border: 2px solid #444;\" src=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-10-24-193022-e1762034853682.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"586\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-10-24-193022-e1762034853682.png 586w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-10-24-193022-e1762034853682-300x96.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 586px) 100vw, 586px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2022 \u2022 \u2022\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Local Joint&#8221; in Fairview, North Carolina, 10 miles downwind of Asheville, offers an attractively-priced Eggs Benedict for <strong>$11<\/strong> &#8212; though, <a href=\"https:\/\/static.spotapps.co\/spots\/7d\/92aad9aee54b55878d6a5322eeeadd\/full\">by appearances<\/a>, their home fries have a good deal more &#8220;fried&#8221; in them than &#8220;home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Inching up the price-point, our local IHOP has &#8220;Classic Eggs Benedict&#8221; (Black Forest ham, poached eggs and Hollandaise on an English muffin) for <strong>$11.99<\/strong>.\u00a0 Predictably, it rates only<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mashed.com\/1546527\/chain-restaurant-eggs-benedict-ranked-worst-best\/\"> a few points above Denny&#8217;s<\/a> as one of the worst versions of the dish.\u00a0 I hop away!<\/p>\n<p>The popular retro Asheville diner, <a href=\"https:\/\/5pointsasheville.com\/\">5 Points Restaurant<\/a>, does a traditional Eggs Benedict (two poached eggs, Canadian Bacon, English muffin and Hollandaise) for <strong>$12.45<\/strong>.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a photo by a Yelp patron, apparently after a paprika thunderstorm passed through:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-35609 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/5pt2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"544\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/5pt2.jpg 544w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/5pt2-300x183.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 544px) 100vw, 544px\" \/><br \/>\nI haven&#8217;t sampled the 5 Points Eggs Benedict but the reviews are good.\u00a0 I&#8217;d consider trying them if my spouse didn&#8217;t already make great breakfasts at the drop of a hint.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2022 \u2022 \u2022\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re willing to part with 9 pesos more (<strong>$12.99<\/strong>), you can try &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abuelaslittlekitchen.com\/menu.html\">Mexican Eggs Benedict<\/a>&#8221; at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abuelaslittlekitchen.com\/\">Abuela&#8217;s Little Kitchen<\/a> a few miles south of Asheville.\u00a0 They call their plate &#8220;Mexican&#8221; because they spread avocado on the muffin, add chipotle to the Hollandaise, and toss in a few jalapenos for good measure.\u00a0 Abuela&#8217;s gets good reviews, but chipotle Hollandaise?<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/beachmountaindiner.com\/\">Beach Mountain Diner<\/a> in Waynesville, 30 miles west of Asheville, offers what it calls &#8220;Traditional Eggs Benedict&#8221; for <strong>$13.99<\/strong>.\u00a0 For that extra dollar, they promise &#8220;a perfectly poached egg on a grilled English muffin&#8221; plus the usual sides.\u00a0 If their idea of &#8220;traditional&#8221; consists of one lonely egg, perfectly-poached though it may be, then excuse me.<\/p>\n<p>Entering the field at <strong>$16<\/strong> is the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stoneyknobcafe.com\/sundays-brunch\">Stoney Knob Benny<\/a>&#8221; from Stoney Knob Cafe north of Asheville.\u00a0 This Benedict embraces ingredient fluidity: crab cakes supplant the muffins, ham and bacon. I&#8217;d rather have the basics, please, but that&#8217;s what happens when the chef gets cute and calls it <i>Benny<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Beradu Market and Restaurant in Black Mountain, NC,\u00a0 occupies the <strong>$16.99<\/strong> price-point with a rather ordinary-sounding Benedict: &#8220;<em>English Muffin, Thick Cut Nueske\u2019s Canadian Bacon, Poached Eggs, and House Made Hollandaise. Served with choice of Hash Brown Casserole, Home Fries, Grits, or Fresh Fruit.<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0 The bacon gets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nueskes.com\/bacon\">good press<\/a> so maybe that how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackmountainnews.com\/story\/news\/2023\/09\/21\/beradu-new-specialty-restaurant-and-market-to-open-in-black-mountain\/70916748007\/\">the Floridian owners<\/a> hope to attract tourists-slash-diners.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.talljohns.com\/\">Tall John&#8217;s<\/a> of Asheville wastes little ink describing its Eggs Benedict: &#8220;<em>Poached Eggs, English Muffin, Bacon, Hollandaise.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em> <strong>$17.<\/strong>\u00a0 To reassure its patrons, I think Tall John&#8217;s should have added, &#8220;<em>Plate.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2022 \u2022 \u2022\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Our favorite dining room in Asheville &#8212; pre-Helene &#8212; was Red Stag Grill at the Grand Bohemian Lodge.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t eat there much anymore (or anywhere, actually) and have never had brunch there.\u00a0 But for <strong>$18<\/strong>, you may revel in Red Stag&#8217;s Benedict:<em> Mornay creamed spinach, Canadian bacon, Hollandaise and Red Stag Potatoes, <\/em>while sitting beneath stags&#8217; skulls (<a href=\"https:\/\/scontent-atl3-3.xx.fbcdn.net\/v\/t39.30808-6\/581039224_122217227096096770_7127818781905003796_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_s640x640_tt6&amp;_nc_cat=110&amp;ccb=1-7&amp;_nc_sid=127cfc&amp;_nc_ohc=B2PtRkVFLwsQ7kNvwF8h3yH&amp;_nc_oc=AdmiQ1bXDeDqqDc8vVd-TtwIvZA4oUMh6qMOiYG44N_sksvSP6KGtEJGOWc9xZ_DB1c&amp;_nc_zt=23&amp;_nc_ht=scontent-atl3-3.xx&amp;_nc_gid=bWTe2JJUG3GuIbj_ujd0BQ&amp;oh=00_AfjTqcP_1fNVg1cJBQ_IZCIX2ko-plRzVt7_VJ-pQhbuLA&amp;oe=69241F14\">see image<\/a>) which makes every morsel all the more exquisite.<\/p>\n<p>But I sense we&#8217;re wasting time here &#8212; we have yet to cite an Eggs Benedict price that even approaches that of La Jardinier.\u00a0 It&#8217;s time to get real, as in real-real-expensive.<\/p>\n<p>For that, we head to Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C., where <a href=\"https:\/\/thepembrokedc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Pembroke-Breakfast-Menu-June-2025.pdf\">The Pembroke<\/a> describes itself thus:\u00a0 &#8220;<em>The Pembroke\u2019s stunning design by Martin Brudnizki features plush velvet coral-toned banquettes around glossy marble tables, cream-paneled walls with playful artwork, and boasts panoramic views of the neighborhood, while a seasonal terrace offers al fresco dining from spring to fall.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Given that frothy self-promotion, what would you guess The Pembroke charges for its <em>Maryland Chesapeake Crab Benedict<\/em>?\u00a0 $25?\u00a0 $35?\u00a0 The answer is&#8230;<\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-35638 size-full\" style=\"border: 2px solid #c0c0c0; margin-bottom: 32px;\" src=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-11-19-180815.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1045\" height=\"86\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-11-19-180815.png 1045w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-11-19-180815-300x25.png 300w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-11-19-180815-640x53.png 640w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-11-19-180815-768x63.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1045px) 100vw, 1045px\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Yet another mention of <a href=\"https:\/\/leitesculinaria.com\/78630\/recipes-baked-spinach-mornay.html\"><em>spinach Mornay<\/em><\/a>!\u00a0 Remind me to visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/71220+Mornay,+France\/@46.498673,4.3392846,13z\">Mornay<\/a> in my next life to taste their spinach, as it appears to be an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.todayifoundout.com\/index.php\/2017\/01\/cereal-become-part-complete-breakfast\/\">important part of a complete (ritzy) breakfast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2022 \u2022 \u2022\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s time go really big here&#8230; $40 may be four times the Cafe Papillon price, but it&#8217;s still Trump Change.\u00a0 The most expensive Eggs Benedict I found &#8212; edging out La Jardinier&#8217;s pork-belly pomposity &#8212; is from the original &#8220;home&#8221; of Eggs Benedict, Delmonico&#8217;s in New York City.\u00a0 Delmonico&#8217;s version, which consists of one duck egg plus king crab and\u00a0 lobster terrine, rings up at <strong>$59\u00a0<\/strong>(or\u00a0<strong>$99<\/strong> with caviar, and of course you want the caviar).<\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-35569 size-full\" style=\"border: 2px solid #565656;
