{"id":30343,"date":"2023-08-08T18:39:58","date_gmt":"2023-08-08T22:39:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/?p=30343"},"modified":"2023-08-10T15:26:09","modified_gmt":"2023-08-10T19:26:09","slug":"thoughts-large-84","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/2023\/08\/thoughts-large-84\/","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts @ Large: 84"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>\u00a7\u00a0 This travel rule originated with my spouse, but I concur:\u00a0 Any on-the-road restroom where you have to ask for the key will make you regret having asked for the key.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a7\u00a0 I was slicing radishes for our dinner salads when I made a tiny but generously-bleeding cut on the end of my thumb.\u00a0 Acknowledging my inherent lack of skill with knives, I said to my spouse, &#8220;If I had lived in the 1850s, I&#8217;d be dead by now.&#8221;\u00a0 (Hmm, ya think?)<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a7\u00a0 How the shame of shame has changed.\u00a0 On August 9, 1974, President Nixon resigned rather than face impeachment for conspiring to cover up a criminal act.\u00a0 Not half a century later, President Trump led a conspiracy to overturn the result of a legitimate election and then has the temerity to insist that his First Amendment rights demanded this of him.\u00a0 Yes, the First Amendment protects your right to be an asshole, Mr. Trump, so you be you.<\/p>\r\n<p>Interestingly, <em>temerity<\/em> comes from the Latin <em>tenebrio<\/em>, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/word\/temerity\">person who operates in darkness<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 This must also be the Latin root word for <em>trump<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a7\u00a0 If I may share this once-upon-a-time excerpt from Bill Moyer&#8217;s May 1976 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/documents\/interview-with-bill-moyers-public-broadcasting-services-usa-people-and-politics\">PBS interview<\/a> with then-presidential-hopeful Jimmy Carter:<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"padding-left: 22px; padding-right: 15px;\">\r\n<p><i>Q:<\/i> Governor, when you say, &#8220;I will never lie, I will never mislead you,&#8221; people have more doubts about your perception of reality than they do about your integrity.<\/p>\r\n<p><i>Governor Carter:<\/i> I understand.<\/p>\r\n<p><i>Q:<\/i> Other people are now saying, &#8220;Jimmy Carter is trying to put one over on us. But Jimmy Carter just doesn&#8217;t understand the way Washington &#8230; works.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<p><i>Governor Carter:<\/i> I understand that. And I have thought about that a lot, because I&#8217;ve been in debate a lot, and one of the great surprises to me in the campaign was that when I made that simple statement 18 months ago \u2014 not in a fervent way, not even in a way to surprise anybody \u2014 that I, as a candidate and as a President, I&#8217;m not going to lie to you, that it became so controversial.<\/p>\r\n<p><i>Q:<\/i> Why were you surprised?<\/p>\r\n<p><i>Governor Carter:<\/i> I was surprised &#8230; it was a controversy. The first time I ever voted was in 1948.\u00a0 I voted for Truman.\u00a0 He&#8217;s still my favorite President.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t believe that Truman ever told me a lie or told the American people a lie. He may have, but I don&#8217;t believe he did.\u00a0 I think other Presidents since then have.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t see any reason for it.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<p>We have traveled light-years beyond Jimmy Carter&#8217;s spacetime.\u00a0 Spin is now the currency of the realm.\u00a0 Liars are embraced if they tell us what we want to hear.\u00a0 Truth?\u00a0 How quaint!<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; and posted a photo of a tire he keeps next to his computer desk for its aroma.<\/p>\r\n<p>Then there are people who like the smell of skunk.\u00a0 (Not me, but certain people I know.)\u00a0\u00a0 Quora user David Lincoln Brooks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/Is-it-weird-to-like-the-smell-of-skunk\">rhapsodized thus<\/a> about roadkill skunk:\u00a0 &#8220;<span class=\"CssComponent__CssInlineComponent-sc-1oskqb9-1 UserSelectableText___StyledCssInlineComponent-lsmoq4-0\"><span class=\"q-box qu-userSelect--text\">Yet on a cold November night, when the assailed skunk is a mile away, then the smell tints the cold still air with a curious mournful longing\u2026 the olfactory poignance of a distant train whistle at midnight.&#8221;\u00a0 OK, Walt Whitman, but what about tires?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a7\u00a0 A while back, I read maybe half of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oif.ala.org\/review-everybody-lies-big-data-new-data-and-what-the-internet-can-tell-us-about-who-we-really-are\/\"><em>Everybody Lies: Big Data, New Data<\/em><\/a> (and so on) by <span class=\"st\">Seth Stephens-Davidowitz; his topic was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oif.ala.org\/review-everybody-lies-big-data-new-data-and-what-the-internet-can-tell-us-about-who-we-really-are\/\">how our internet searches reveal &#8216;the real truth&#8217; about ourselves<\/a>.\u00a0 The author&#8217;s examples and anecdotes might have made for a good essay in <em>The Atlantic<\/em>, but not a whole book.<br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"st\">I increasingly don&#8217;t care whether I finish non-fiction books &#8212; I find there is rarely much substance after the first 100 pages.\u00a0 I know a book has been padded when I start skimming the first sentences of paragraphs and don&#8217;t feel like I&#8217;m missing anything.\u00a0 Just because an author satisfies his publisher&#8217;s word count doesn&#8217;t mean I have to follow suit.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a7\u00a0 Why is it easier to give up on a bad movie than a bad book?\u00a0 I venture it&#8217;s because we take (somewhat) more care selecting books and thus are more invested in our choices, which makes us less willing to abandon books.\u00a0 Do Kindle users agree?<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a7\u00a0 Old people are too old to be funny.\u00a0 Consider: Jane Curtin is 75 (I think she has always been 75).\u00a0 Goldie Hawn is 78.\u00a0 Dave Letterman is 78, as is Steve Martin.\u00a0 Michael Palin and Eric Idle are 80.\u00a0 Lily Tomlin is 83.\u00a0 Tom Smothers is 86.\u00a0 Bob Newhart is 93.\u00a0 I am 70, and this wasn&#8217;t funny at all, so that clinches it.\u00a0 Old comics: they&#8217;re either weird, or dead.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a7\u00a0 I have three questions that need answers:<\/p>\r\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 How do pacemakers know to speed up during exercise, when we need more oxygen?<\/p>\r\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 Has any contestant on <em>The Price is Right<\/em> intentionally interfered with the wheel while it was spinning?\u00a0 You know, to slow it down and try to make it land on $1.00.\u00a0 After 50 years, wouldn&#8217;t you be surprised if it hasn&#8217;t been tried at least once?<\/p>\r\n<p>\u2022\u00a0 What does eel taste like?
