I had to remind him again last week that he didn&#8217;t need to call me <em>Mr. Collins<\/em> &#8212; and he is definitely a man of few, carefully-chosen words.\u00a0 But Ralph is Mr. Reliability when it comes to delivering on what he promises, and that&#8217;s what matters here.<\/p>\r\n<p>When I call Ralph for an appointment, he answers, &#8220;Ralph&#8217;s Auto,&#8221; in such a sober tone that it makes me want to take a box of donuts over to his shop to perk things up.\u00a0 (And yes, we have done so.)\u00a0 Given Ralph&#8217;s general demeanor, I had to smile when I looked over the service receipt* from my last oil change and how Ralph filled it out:<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/Auto-Repair-062.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-28564 size-large\" style=\"margin-bottom: 24px;\" src=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/Auto-Repair-062-640x503.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"503\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/Auto-Repair-062-640x503.jpg 640w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/Auto-Repair-062-300x236.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/Auto-Repair-062-768x604.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/Auto-Repair-062.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>It struck me that the most interesting thing about this form is the fact that <em>Ralph<\/em> uses it.\u00a0 The only fields he fills out faithfully are the service date, customer name, make and model, odometer reading and amount due.\u00a0 Everything else on this exhaustively subdivided form gets entered in a style one could call <em>mechanic minimalist<\/em> &#8212; the lone organizing principle being &#8220;Parts on Left, Labor on Right.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<p>This begs the question: in what anal-retentive universe would any car mechanic come up with a form like this?\u00a0 Certainly not the one Ralph lives in.\u00a0 I&#8217;m thinking military.<\/p>\r\n<hr style=\"width: 99%; height: 2px; background: #ccc;\" \/>\r\n<p>Take the <span style=\"border: solid #333 1px; padding: 0 .15rem; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;\">ESTIMATE<\/span> section.\u00a0 Ralph&#8217;s form provides for an <em>initial<\/em> estimate, then a <em>revised<\/em> estimate (with time and date and initials!) and even a <em>third<\/em> revised estimate:<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/auto-detail0.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28572\" src=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/auto-detail0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"113\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/auto-detail0.jpg 640w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/auto-detail0-300x53.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>What the hell kind of repair involves <em>three estimates<\/em> from one shop?\u00a0 You can be sure that Ralph would show you the door before offering you even a second estimate, because you would already have proven yourself to be too much trouble.<\/p>\r\n<p>Predictably, Ralph has never filled out the <span style=\"border: solid #333 1px; padding: 0 .15rem; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;\">ESTIMATE<\/span> section for anything his shop has done for me.\u00a0 All our agreements have been verbal handshakes.\u00a0 Someday, I should ask Ralph if he has filled in this part of the form for any repair, ever &#8212; or would doing so mean that the job is more trouble than it&#8217;s worth?\u00a0 I think I already know the answer.<\/p>\r\n<hr style=\"width: 99%; height: 2px; background: #ccc;\" \/>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/auto-detail2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-28566 size-medium\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/auto-detail2-257x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"257\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/auto-detail2-257x300.jpg 257w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/auto-detail2-548x640.jpg 548w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/auto-detail2.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/><\/a>In the upper right, we find more laughers like the <span style=\"border: solid #333 1px; padding: 0 .15rem; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;\">Time\u00a0Received<\/span> and <span style=\"border: solid #333 1px; padding: 0 .15rem; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;\">Promised<\/span> boxes, complete with <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">AM<\/span> and <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">PM<\/span> symbols to save precious time and ink.<\/p>\r\n<p>These are one-upped by the <span style=\"border: solid #333 1px; padding: 0 .15rem; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;\">Phone\u00a0When\u00a0Ready<\/span> Yes\/No checkboxes.\u00a0 Way back when, I would ask Ralph to call me when my car was ready, and he would always say, will do, but he hardly ever did.\u00a0 He probably just forgot to check Yes <span style=\"border: solid #333 1px; padding: 0 .15rem; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 8pt; position: relative; bottom: 1.5pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> .<\/p>\r\n<p>I love the throwback <span style=\"border: solid #333 1px; padding: 0 .15rem; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;\">Pack\u00a0Front\u00a0Wheel\u00a0Bearings<\/span> checklist item.\u00a0 Hey, couldn&#8217;t we all use a good front-wheel-bearing packing right about now?<\/p>\r\n<hr style=\"width: 99%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;\">\u2605<\/span>\u00a0 to encode new\/used\/rebuilt, plus two <em>extra<\/em> columns with no headings, I guess so that ambitious service guys can invent their own codes.<\/p>\r\n<p>Needless to say, Ralph doesn&#8217;t use codes and doesn&#8217;t &#8220;color inside the lines&#8221; padding: 0 .15rem; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;\">REPAIR\u00a0ORDER\u00a0LABOR\u00a0INSTRUCTION<\/span> area, where labor gets its due.\u00a0 Ralph&#8217;s narrative looks a little lost floating inside this big box.<\/p>\r\n<hr style=\"width: 99%; height: 2px; background: #ccc;\" \/>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-28571 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/auto-detail7-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/auto-detail7-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/auto-detail7.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Finally the bottom line.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t get distracted by those <span style=\"border: solid #333 1px; padding: 0 .15rem; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;\">INTERNAL\u00a0SUMMARY<\/span> columns to the left because, rest assured, Ralph isn&#8217;t.
