{"id":27052,"date":"2022-02-01T00:11:36","date_gmt":"2022-02-01T05:11:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/?p=27052"},"modified":"2022-08-01T07:42:42","modified_gmt":"2022-08-01T11:42:42","slug":"thoughts-large-love-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/2022\/02\/thoughts-large-love-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts @ Large: Love Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u2665<\/span>\u00a0 We&#8217;re back!\u00a0 It&#8217;s Love Month.\u00a0 So much more romantic than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/aae-declares-may-save-your-tooth-month-301280940.html\">Save Your Tooth Month<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/green.nd.edu\/news\/refrigerator\/\">Refrigerator Month<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quiltingdaily.com\/march-is-national-quilting-month-inside-quilters-newsletter\/\">Quilting Month<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nationaldaycalendar.com\/american-cheese-month-may\/\">American Cheese Month<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maxxsouth.com\/maxxcommunity\/national-anti-boredom-month\">Anti-Boredom Month<\/a>.\u00a0 Lots of love from this writer to all you readers.\u00a0 This month, anyway.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u2665<\/span>\u00a0 I love the software that helps me create songs out of thin air.\u00a0 I love the press-to-open, press-to-close trunk lid on my SUV.\u00a0 I love the warmth and comfort that my gas furnace provides in the winter, not to mention the days when it just feels a little cold in the house and I bump it up a degree.\u00a0 I love Santa Rosa plums, on the rare occasion I can find them.\u00a0 I love typing two spaces after a period even though modern style guides insist I must only use one.\u00a0 I love my mom&#8217;s recipe for beef chili with macaroni which my spouse (whom I <em>dearly<\/em> love) lovingly and patiently agrees to re-create for me.\u00a0 I love being helpful.\u00a0 I love being acknowledged as if what I do matters.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u2665<\/span>\u00a0 I also love fresh berries on my cereal.\u00a0 My parents grew up during the Great Depression, and their idea of what was and wasn&#8217;t affordable determined what fruit topped my cereal. In other words, sliced bananas &#8212; I don&#8217;t think blueberries, raspberries or blackberries\u00a0 ever made one appearance in our house.\u00a0 Strawberries were a once-a-year thing, always reserved for strawberry shortcake, too special to put on cereal.\u00a0 As for cherries &#8212; I know, not a berry &#8212; let&#8217;s just say I was good friends with the <em>Thank You<\/em> brand of glop-in-a-can.\u00a0 So in retirement, I&#8217;m doing my best to compensate for all my young berry-less years.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/covid-omicron.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-27186 size-medium\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\" title=\"Buncombe County Omicron Wave\" src=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/covid-omicron-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"Buncombe County Omicron Wave Graph\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/covid-omicron-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/covid-omicron-640x399.jpg 640w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/covid-omicron-768x478.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/covid-omicron.jpg 994w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u2665<\/span>\u00a0 I&#8217;m not really retired &#8212; my full-time job these days is <a href=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/covid-omicron.jpg\">avoiding covid<\/a>.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve had this job nearly two years, with no vacation time,\u00a0 and the pay has not been that great either: $3200 in total, or 28 cents per waking hour.\u00a0 Hey, I&#8217;d like to quit this job, like everyone else in the Great Resignation, but I&#8217;m afraid the next job I get might really suck.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u2665<\/span>\u00a0 Just because those close to you accept you the way you are and show appreciation for things you do doesn&#8217;t mean you have a free pass from doing more and better.\u00a0 The Land of Missed Opportunities is the vastest, least-explored expanse on Planet Humanity.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u2665<\/span>\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/healthy-eating\/is-chili-good-for-you-a8713219751\/\">Studies<\/a> show that people who eat vegetarian chili live, on average, <em>140 days longer<\/em> than those who eat meat-based chili.\u00a0 Other studies find that those who eat chicken\/turkey chili live<em> 19 days longer<\/em> than we Neanderthals who plunge our hairy hands into the <em>real<\/em> thing, i.e., beef chili.\u00a0 If nothing else, beef chili people will die happy knowing we will have more attendees at our funerals than those of alt-chili persuasions.\u00a0 So do us beefy-types a favor, look beyond our taste in chili and pick us out some nice flowers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u2665<\/span>\u00a0 Eulogy at my funeral:\u00a0 &#8220;<em>He was, by some accounts, a fine man.\u00a0 Yes, he ate beef chili and relished it.\u00a0 But how shall we judge this man?\u00a0 By how he ate or how he orated?<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u2665<\/span>\u00a0 I have been spending hours upon hours the past few months date-sorting and scanning our old family snapshots from the 1970s to the early 2000s.\u00a0 It has been impossible for me not to notice, in these micro-captures of our lives, how the subjects always seem to be beaming, if not downright vivacious.\u00a0 Which brought to mind the current-day criticisms of sites like Facebook and Instagram, namely, how shared images unrealistically over-depict good times and good looks and so generate feelings of envy and inadequacy in viewers.\u00a0 The fact is, Americans have been curating their lives (we called them &#8220;Kodak Moments&#8221; back then) long before Instagram arrived and we still do.\u00a0 Snapshooters, myself included, create selectively-good, real yet unrealistic, memories the instant we press the button.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/iccube.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-27148\" style=\"margin-top: -7px;\" src=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/iccube-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/iccube-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/iccube-640x640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/iccube-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/iccube-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/iccube-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/iccube-2048x2048.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>\u2665<\/span>\u00a0 Among the 20th-century traditions I miss, and they are many, is how your average-to-nice restaurant would offer you a treat as you left the establishment.
