As the Sun pours its rays on Earth's dust\r\nAirless clouds whirl in russet and rose\r\nRivers sink into cracks in the crust\r\nGrasses burn as a dreadful wind blows\r\n\r\nThere were years when the mallows grew tall\r\nScarlet petals would sip on the dew\r\nWhen the mist from a cool waterfall\r\nWetted rocks where the mosses once grew\r\n\r\nWading birds stalked their prey in the ponds \r\nThat the beavers had fashioned from creeks\r\nLady ferns produced copious fronds\r\nMade to moisten the wading birds' beaks\r\n\r\nLack of snow did away with the streams\r\nLack of plants led to ever less rain\r\nWe accepted extremer extremes\r\nBut we hoped for a less painful pain\r\n\r\nWe watch robins peck dirt to find food\r\nIn days past, they found worms everywhere\r\nBut as drought baked away plenitude\r\nEasy meals grew increasingly rare\r\n\r\nThey say corn on the cob was a treat\r\nThat our grandparents ate long ago\r\nMaize was bred to survive summer heat\r\nBut not hundreds of days in a row\r\n\r\nWarming waters drove fish from the shores\r\nAnd the size of the catches went down\r\nNow we never find fish in the stores\r\nUnder ninety-nine dollars a pound\r\n\r\nSteaming trucks inch along buckled roads\r\nRiver barges lay trapped in the sand\r\nCargo pilots fly overweight loads\r\nAnd then pray for a safe place to land\r\n\r\nGlobal warming exceeded our fears\r\nNow there's nothing the experts can do\r\nAll their warnings just fell on deaf ears\r\nAnd the poets are drying... up... too...<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
