{"id":25773,"date":"2021-06-24T18:53:35","date_gmt":"2021-06-24T22:53:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/?p=25773"},"modified":"2022-08-01T07:42:43","modified_gmt":"2022-08-01T11:42:43","slug":"we-still-havent-got-trump-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/2021\/06\/we-still-havent-got-trump-right\/","title":{"rendered":"We Still Haven&#8217;t Got Trump Right"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even though Donald Trump no longer dominates every minute of every media day, we are\u00a0 all too aware that he still aspires to.\u00a0 Our corporate\/cooperative media loves to play up the &#8220;Emperor in Exile&#8221; angle, as if Trump were Napoleon and Mar-a-Lago were his Elba.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/trumpoleon.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-25844\" style=\"margin-top: 10px; width: 250px;\" src=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/trumpoleon-300x191.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/trumpoleon-300x191.png 300w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/trumpoleon.png 529w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a>If I may remind, Napoleon escaped from the island of Elba in March of 1815, then gathered a new army and &#8220;reinstated&#8221; himself as Emperor of the French.\u00a0 In June of that year, his army would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nam.ac.uk\/explore\/battle-waterloo\">crushed<\/a> at Waterloo, leading to Napoleon&#8217;s second and final exile, on the isle of St. Helena in the South Atlantic. Plagued by boredom and loneliness, he died there in 1821, claiming his captors had poisoned him.<\/p>\n<p>Trump is like Napoleon was, not only in his delusions of grandeur but also in terms of his popular appeal.\u00a0 Consider this &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegreatcoursesdaily.com\/the-rise-of-napoleon\/\">Great Courses<\/a>&#8221; profile of Napoleon, written of him in 2017:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 0 30px 0 30px;\"><em>Napoleon would become a great champion of the self-made man. He would become the idol of a great many people, commoners who saw in Napoleon the possibilities of what a man of talent, what a man blessed with ability, with ambition, could do if he were unfettered by the structures of the old regime.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Substitute <em>Trump<\/em> for <em>Napoleon<\/em> in that paragraph and ask yourself, was that not exactly how Trump marketed himself to America, boisterously and incessantly, on his way to becoming President and while he was President?<\/p>\n<p>But such comparisons miss the mark in an important way.\u00a0 Napoleon Bonaparte gained his fame and power by military conquest; Donald Trump did so through demagoguery, drawing strength from the basest instincts of his base.\u00a0 Whereas Napoleon needed wars, Trump demanded audiences.<\/p>\n<p>Trump found that the best way to draw the largest crowds was to expect nothing of them but instead entertain and pander to them.\u00a0 These were the messages Trump sent to them:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle; padding-left: 25px; padding-right: 25px;\">\n<li>It&#8217;s OK to be bigoted &#8212; but don&#8217;t let anyone call you one.<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s OK to say whatever you want, even if it isn&#8217;t accurate or well-reasoned, and even if it offends someone.\u00a0 In fact, offending people is kind of fun.<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s OK to be selfish, but you&#8217;re not selfish if you&#8217;re nice to your friends.<\/li>\n<li>Everyone else is trying to steal your hard-earned money.<\/li>\n<li>And it&#8217;s their fault if your life isn&#8217;t what you want it to be.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_25824\" style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/strump2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25824\" class=\"wp-image-25824\" style=\"wodth: 310px;\" src=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/strump2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"310\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/strump2.png 620w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/strump2-207x300.png 207w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/strump2-441x640.png 441w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-25824\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #222;\">&#8220;I&#8217;m a narcissist, a racist and a bully, and goddammit, people like me.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>These messages resonated with millions of Americans who, at heart, do not want to bear any moral or societal obligation.\u00a0 Donald Trump became a kind of Bizarro <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikizero.com\/en\/Stuart_Smalley\">Stuart Smalley<\/a> for such &#8220;individualists&#8221;. He didn&#8217;t want them to be better people.\u00a0 He didn&#8217;t expect them to serve any cause except themselves.\u00a0 In fact, Trump rarely asked anything of his followers except to show loyalty to Trump.\u00a0 His message of affirmation for them was: follow me and you&#8217;ll feel good about feeling angry.<\/p>\n<p>The MAGA mob knew it was OK to storm the Capitol if they did it in Trump&#8217;s name.
