about 12 miles north of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Sinclair\/@36.8924226,-109.0064919,11z\/data=!4m22!1m16!4m15!1m6!1m2!1s0x873a25d2c9c70acd:0xc9945bd27b66993a!2sFour+Corners+Monument,+New+Mexico+597,+Teec+Nos+Pos,+AZ!2m2!1d-109.0451507!2d36.9989402!1m6!1m2!1s0x873a39e93604589f:0x2f417fc1c78629a7!2sSinclair,+Hwy+64+West,+Shiprock,+NM+87420!2m2!1d-109.0148234!2d36.8312587!3e3!3m4!1s0x873a39e93604589f:0x2f417fc1c78629a7!8m2!3d36.8312587!4d-109.0148234\">Sinclair gas station<\/a> in Beclabito, NM &#8212; where four states meet at a single point.*\u00a0 But this begs the question: what about the near-misses?\u00a0 Shouldn&#8217;t those places get a little bit of nerd-love too?<\/p>\n<p>I will call these areas Four-State Circles &#8212; circles that include at least some part of four different states, other than the aforementioned Four Corners.\u00a0 Here are my challenges:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: upper-alpha; padding-left: 12px;\">\n<li>\u00a0What and where in the U.S. is the smallest Four-State Circle (and its runner-up)?<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Similarly, what about the smallest Five-State Circle (and its runner-up)?<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Finally, the smallest Six-State Circle (and its runner-up)?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I am sure you&#8217;ll all agree that we can safely stop at six states without feeling like we have shortchanged the topic.\u00a0 So let&#8217;s go exploring &#8212; and here&#8217;s a map to help.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24519\" src=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/us.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"562\" height=\"377\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Four-State Circles<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When scanning the map for potential four-state solutions, the key is to focus on regions where two nearby states don&#8217;t share a border.\u00a0 This suggests a closer look at places like the Oklahoma panhandle and the contorted path of the Mississippi River south of Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>But it turns out that both the winner and the runner-up for the smallest Four-State Circle lie east of the Appalachians.\u00a0 Surprisingly, neither circle involves Rhode Island, and both include my home state of Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;\">THE RUNNER-UP<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-24466 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/virginia4-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/virginia4-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/virginia4-768x518.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/virginia4-640x432.jpg 640w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/virginia4.jpg 831w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Zoom to <span id=\"trk[1]_tracklist_item\" title=\"\">39.594\u0274, 78.350\u1d21, 100 feet from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/dir\/39.5951033,-78.3439304\/Pepper+Ln,+1,+WV+25422\/@39.5947015,-78.3516704,1024m\/data=!3m1!1e3!4m9!4m8!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x89ca6db1f6b3bb8d:0xbf0cc5120e12ff6b!2m2!1d-78.3510093!2d39.5939803!3e0\">Pepper Lane<\/a> in Doe Gully, West Virginia.\u00a0 Next draw a circle of 8.83 miles radius around that point.\u00a0 This circle touches four states: from north to south, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia.\u00a0 This may be the runner-up Four-State Circle, but I believe it is the shortest path that crosses four states, a subtly different problem.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;\">THE WINNER<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-24468 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/delawar4-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/delawar4-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/delawar4-768x518.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/delawar4-640x432.jpg 640w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/delawar4.jpg 831w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Now shift your focus 200 miles eastward to 39.676<span id=\"trk[1]_tracklist_item\" title=\"\">\u0274<\/span>, 75.666<span id=\"trk[1]_tracklist_item\" title=\"\">\u1d21<\/span> in Delaware, across the street from an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Eagle+Run+Rd,+Delaware\/@39.6748447,-75.6691423,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x89c700d8225b83e3:0x995f725fcf3f3298!8m2!3d39.6748447!4d-75.6669536\">industrial park<\/a> in Christiana.\u00a0 A 6.55-mile radius circle around this point is mostly Delaware, with slivers of New Jersey, Maryland and Pennsylvania.\u00a0 This would be a conflicted place to be a sports fan: 7 miles from three different states with major league sports teams, but not one to call your own.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Five-State Circles<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The Five-State Circles were more painstaking to sort through.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not like one can just enlarge a Four-State Circle a few miles in order to pick up a fifth state.\u00a0 And what&#8217;s worse, all of the obvious candidates were so similar in size that some very careful plotting was needed to find the winner.\u00a0 Here are the results:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;\">THE RUNNER-UP<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-24470 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/mo5-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/mo5-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/mo5-768x518.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/mo5-640x432.jpg 640w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/mo5.jpg 831w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Take U.S. 60 toward Grayridge, Missouri, then head a couple of miles south, and you will find &#8212; besides a lot of farmland &#8212; the center of the runner-up Five-State Circle.\u00a0 This 28.8-mile-radius circle takes in parts of Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri, plus razor-thin slices of Arkansas and Illinois.\u00a0 S0, Grayridge, population 122, you are now on the map.\u00a0 Welcome to internet fame.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10.5pt;\">THE WINNER<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/olka-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-24460 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/olka-5-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/olka-5-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/olka-5-768x518.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/olka-5-640x432.jpg 640w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/olka-5.jpg 831w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Here is where the Oklahoma panhandle gets its chance to shine.\u00a0 A 27.1-mile radius circle centered on 36.892<span id=\"trk[1]_tracklist_item\" title=\"\">\u0274<\/span>, 102.514<span id=\"trk[1]_tracklist_item\" title=\"\">\u1d21<\/span>, just north of Boise City, touches parts of five states: New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.\u00a0 Although the center of the circle is now just a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/@36.8960445,-102.5177537,3a,50.9y,144.66h,91.28t\/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sQ5mQOVXrgyuKbtELMZYwKw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192\">pile of rubble<\/a> next to U.S. 385, just wait until some enterprising Okie gets wind of this and builds a McDonalds there.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Six-State Circles<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There are two attractive candidates here &#8212;
