When we lived down by the creekside
\nI knew all the dark places there were to hide
\nand they could not find me if they tried
\nif I just had some Skedaddle Cream Pie.<\/p>\n
Mama was making it the day she died
\nAunt Bess thought it might have been suicide
\nbut I tell you now what they all denied
\nshe had herself a piece of Skedaddle Cream Pie.<\/p>\n
With Mama gone, it turned the tide
\nfor me, I got all stupefied
\nand dumbstruck, my tongue was so tied
\nI could hardly eat my Skedaddle Cream Pie.<\/p>\n
At some odd hour, not sure when, I’d
\nfound myself down at the creek and cried,
\nHey Mama, I still need you by my side,
\nHow come you ate Skedaddle Cream Pie?<\/p>\n
I looked up when my tears had dried
\nand there was a cop! The Man had spied
\nme leaving home — did he decide
\nthat I fed Mama that Skedaddle Cream Pie?<\/p>\n
Hey son, he said, I got to wondering why’d
\nyou run off like that?\u00a0 And I replied,
\nWho’s asking? I was wishing deep inside
\nhe’d go eat some Skedaddle Cream Pie.<\/p>\n
But he brought out the cuffs, and I complied
\ncause fate told me I should take that ride
\ndowntown. What choice was there, I sighed,
\nonce you had tasted Skedaddle Cream Pie.<\/p>\n
The cop questioned me as if I had lied
\nNow, son, you and I need to see eye to
\neye, he said, reckoning that I would confide
\nto him some kind of coup de Skedaddle Cream Pie.<\/p>\n
Not likely, I snarled to him with the kind of pride
\nthat only Mama (or Aunt Bess) could provide.
\nSo he made me spend that night in jail beside
\nsome drunk who smelled like Skedaddle Cream Pie.<\/p>\n
When morning came, the cop later testified,
\nmy cell was empty and the drunk still red-eyed.
\nThe cop should have known I would slip outside
