{"id":1976,"date":"2011-10-19T13:52:21","date_gmt":"2011-10-19T17:52:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/?p=1976"},"modified":"2022-08-01T07:43:21","modified_gmt":"2022-08-01T11:43:21","slug":"my-favorite-coffee-mugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/2011\/10\/my-favorite-coffee-mugs\/","title":{"rendered":"My Favorite Coffee Mugs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/mugs2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1979\" title=\"My Favorite Mugs\" src=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/mugs2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/mugs2.jpg 640w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/mugs2-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>I have not one but two favorite mugs, as you see above.\u00a0 If both mugs are in the cupboard, I will pick one or the other depending on my mood that morning.\u00a0 If neither is available, it makes for a vaguely disappointing start to the day.<\/p>\n<p>The Bear Mug was my one favorite for years.\u00a0 I have no idea who gave it to me and when, it was so long ago.\u00a0 (It was probably from a family member.\u00a0 To that person: Sorry I have forgotten your act of kindness, but at least you know I enjoyed your gift all these years.)\u00a0 The other side of the mug used to say, &#8220;I&#8217;m A Bear Without My Coffee.&#8221;\u00a0 But now the mug is speechless.\u00a0 It just sits there and scowls.<\/p>\n<p>How did this mug become my favorite?\u00a0 As those who know me can attest, it&#8217;s not because I like &#8220;cute&#8221;.\u00a0 That said, a grumpy cartoon bear is not such a bad fit for me &#8212; better than a dog or cat or floral pattern.\u00a0 (As a matter of principle, I refuse to drink from a mug with a picture of a cat on it.\u00a0 It will never happen as long as I am sentient.)<\/p>\n<p>Mostly what I like about the Bear Mug is its shape and weight.\u00a0 It has some heft to it but is not overly thick like traditional coffee-shop ware.\u00a0 It is a bit squat (the height of the liquid in the mug is about as the same as the diameter) but I like that.\u00a0 The handle is substantial and accommodates a two-finger grip with just enough play.\u00a0 And the mug has good balance, unlike some whose center-of-gravity is so far outboard that holding a full mug makes your knuckles sore.<\/p>\n<p>My other favorite is the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/store.thisamericanlife.org\/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=100THANNIVERSARYMUG\">100 Years of This American Life<\/a>&#8221; mug that my son gave to me a couple of years ago.\u00a0 In physical terms, it is a rather standard-issue mug, nothing special.\u00a0 As to design, the mug is imprinted with cartoon likenesses of the program&#8217;s host, Ira Glass, along with the supposed hosts-of-the-future &#8220;CC the Talking Cat&#8221; and &#8220;WarTron 3000&#8221;.\u00a0 Hard for me to say why this mug became a favorite &#8212; I enjoy &#8220;This American Life&#8221; but it&#8217;s not like I schedule my life around it.<\/p>\n<p>At first, I liked the mug because the idea is clever.\u00a0 But <em>clever<\/em> wears off just as quickly as <em>cute<\/em> does.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t pick up the mug in the morning and think, what a clever idea this is, or how considerate of my son to have bought this for me, or what an erudite person I am for listening to NPR.\u00a0 Actually, I don&#8217;t think about the mug at all anymore, and I have even forgotten that I&#8217;m drinking out of a mug <a href=\"http:\/\/store.thisamericanlife.org\/v\/vspfiles\/photos\/100THANNIVERSARYMUG-3.jpg\">with a picture of a cat on it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is interesting, the rituals we have and the tokens we associate with them, that things like &#8220;favorite coffee mugs&#8221; even exist in our world.\u00a0 In her article, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bellaonline.com\/articles\/art62081.asp\">Creating Simple Rituals<\/a>&#8220;, BellaOnline columnist Leah Patterson argues we should be paying more attention to them:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>So for example, say you are the person that has a cup of coffee every  morning.\u00a0 This is a great ritual for appreciating and valuing oneself.\u00a0 You can start by raising your level of awareness when you are in the  midst of this activity.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em> &#8230; As you are pouring your coffee, adding your cream and sugar, and sitting  down to drink it, do this mindfully.  Prepare that cup of coffee with  love and intent as though you were preparing it for your most beloved  confidante. &#8230; Receive it from  yourself with appreciation and gratitude.
