{"id":18929,"date":"2019-02-25T21:13:42","date_gmt":"2019-02-26T02:13:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/?p=18929"},"modified":"2022-08-01T07:42:51","modified_gmt":"2022-08-01T11:42:51","slug":"an-indifference-to-truth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/2019\/02\/an-indifference-to-truth\/","title":{"rendered":"An Indifference to Truth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A relative of a relative of a relative (I&#8217;ll leave it at that) helpfully sent a little data our way in the form of an email grenade titled &#8220;A Little Data on Illegals in This Country.&#8221;\u00a0 It launched with this chaotic preamble [<em>sic<\/em>]:<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"m_-1974750451412843367yiv0111057664MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">THIS IS NEITHER REPUBLICAN, DEMOCRAT, LIBERAL, OR CONSERVATIVE<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-1974750451412843367yiv0111057664MsoNormal\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A REPORT OF FACTS THAT YOU REALLY SHOULD READ.\u00a0 DECISIONS ARE MORE COMFORTING WITH OUT BIASED AGENDA AS CONGRESS ON BOTH SIDES DELIVER DAILY<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The &#8220;facts&#8221; that followed &#8212; which I choose not to reprint &#8212; were purported to have been written by reporter Tina Griego of the now-defunct <em>Rocky Mountain News<\/em>.\u00a0 (The email provided no publication date.)\u00a0 The author listed about 50 ways in which America would be better off if we were to &#8220;invite 20 million aliens to go home.&#8221;\u00a0 Among the reasons cited were<span class=\"m_-1974750451412843367yiv0111057664m_307947652949838121ydpa4990f34yiv3105201390ydpbb7462ayiv0972087632m1812819589481129914ydp92aa57a7yiv5895139858ox-0ab757ec0f-yiv3369581472ydp6021f044yiv0452188338m594091748656019311m5521001442005437914m-8617656466280027970m-3401744859790897156ydpe623e931yiv2490147329\"> &#8220;<\/span>n<span class=\"m_-1974750451412843367yiv0111057664m_307947652949838121ydpa4990f34yiv3105201390ydpbb7462ayiv0972087632m1812819589481129914ydp92aa57a7yiv5895139858ox-0ab757ec0f-yiv3369581472ydp6021f044yiv0452188338m594091748656019311m5521001442005437914m-8617656466280027970m-3401744859790897156ydpe623e931yiv2490147329\">o more push &#8216;1&#8217; for Spanish or &#8216;2&#8217; for English&#8221; and U.S. cost savings of &#8220;a whopping $538.3 billion dollars a year.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You have no doubt guessed that Ms. Griego had nothing to do with this 1,350-word poisoned-pen letter, as she confirmed in her 2010 <em>Denver Post<\/em> op-ed, &#8220;<span class=\"dfm-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/One thing\u2019s true: People believe what they want\">One thing\u2019s true: People believe what they want<\/a>.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yes, they do.\u00a0 This &#8220;data on illegals&#8221; rant continues to be shared, reposted and forwarded more than 11 years after it was crafted by obdurate xenophobe and right-wing radio guest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newswithviews.com\/Wooldridge\/frosty306.htm\">Frosty Wooldridge<\/a> in 2007.\u00a0 It was forwarded to at least 16 people by the aforementioned relative of a relative of a relative, even though said person had no idea who wrote the piece or when.\u00a0 (I did that research myself.)\u00a0 It was forwarded with an indifference to truth.<\/p>\n<p>So, which is worst?\u00a0 People believing what they want?\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/fighting-hate\/intelligence-report\/2010\/getting-immigration-facts-straight\">Making up<\/a> the things they believe?
