{"id":16861,"date":"2018-01-17T21:29:33","date_gmt":"2018-01-18T02:29:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/?p=16861"},"modified":"2022-08-01T07:42:55","modified_gmt":"2022-08-01T11:42:55","slug":"not-born-to-run","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/2018\/01\/not-born-to-run\/","title":{"rendered":"Not Born to Run"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What is it about me and popular culture?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps <em>versus<\/em> would have been a better conjunction in that question.<\/p>\n<p>I do not feel the slightest twinge of anything (other than mild annoyance) when I hear Springsteen&#8217;s <em>Born to Run<\/em>.\u00a0 What place <em>wasn&#8217;t<\/em> I that every other American seemed to be when that song was popular?<\/p>\n<p>Nor have I ever identified with <em>American Pie <\/em>by Don McLean.\u00a0 In fact, I grew to actively dislike it, because popular people with other sets of experiences seemed to expect that I should pore over it and spend hours trying to re-interpret our shared youth through it.<\/p>\n<p>The number of rock and\/or pop music concerts I have attended over my lifetime can be counted on two hands, with a thumb or two to spare.\u00a0 I wouldn&#8217;t call my taste in music monophonic but The Beatles are the main course and everyone else is garnish.<\/p>\n<p>My cultural disconnect is not limited to music.\u00a0 I never saw <em>The Titanic<\/em> or <em>The Lion King<\/em> or <em>Fast &amp; Furious <\/em>in any version, stage or screen.\u00a0 I never watched an episode of America&#8217;s seemingly-indispensable television comedies <em>Seinfeld<\/em>, <em>Friends<\/em>, <em>Cheers<\/em> or <em>30 Rock.<\/em>\u00a0 I think I stopped watching fiction on television (not counting press briefings by Donald Trump) shortly after <em>L.A. Law<\/em> and <em>Star Trek: The Next Generation <\/em>wrapped up in 1994.\u00a0 All right, there was <em>The X-Files<\/em>.\u00a0 And\u00a0<em>The<\/em><em> Sopranos.<\/em>\u00a0 And <em>Fringe<\/em>.\u00a0 (But it was my alt-universe self who watched <em>Fringe<\/em>, so that may not count.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/heinz2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-16954 size-full\" style=\"border: 1px solid #d3c9c9; margin-top: -6px;\" title=\"Anticipation \/ Born to Run -- Illustration by CHCollins\" src=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/heinz2.jpg\" alt=\"Anticipation \/ Born to Run -- Illustration by CHCollins\" width=\"226\" height=\"196\" \/><\/a>Garth Brooks, Taylor Swift, Kanye West, Miley Cyrus, Bruno Mars, Drake, 50 Cent, Beyonc\u00e9.\u00a0 The names and faces and brands and personas come and go.\u00a0 I am not sure what demands more of my attention these days, musical celebrities or Medicare plans.<\/p>\n<p>I guess I am just not that impatient for entertainment.\u00a0 I like to entertain myself and you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is it about me and popular culture?
