{"id":14087,"date":"2016-09-05T15:37:00","date_gmt":"2016-09-05T19:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/?p=14087"},"modified":"2022-08-01T07:42:59","modified_gmt":"2022-08-01T11:42:59","slug":"thoughts-at-large-39","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/2016\/09\/thoughts-at-large-39\/","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts at Large: 39"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u2022 The last time that this blog featured back-to-back editions of <em>Thoughts at Large<\/em> was over twenty years ago, when Charles Kuralt hosted the blog.\u00a0 We obviously made a few changes since then: for one thing, we do not allow Eugenia Zuckerman to appear on the blog unless she agrees to play the kazoo, and our much-beloved nature segments are now sponsored by Monsanto.\u00a0 Other than that, it&#8217;s pretty much sunshine as usual here.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Mother Teresa (pardon me, <em>Saint Teresa of Calcutta<\/em>) is a Saint in the same sense that Barack Obama is a Nobel Peace Prize winner and Merrick Garland is still not a Justice of the Supreme Court.\u00a0 There are criteria to be met, and then seven or eight old white men get together in a room and decide.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/snarks.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-14148 size-medium\" title=\"The Maureen Down - Ann Coulter Two Cent Coin - by CHCollins\" src=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/snarks-300x156.jpg\" alt=\"The Maureen Down - Ann Coulter Two Cent Coin - by CHCollins\" width=\"300\" height=\"156\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/snarks-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/snarks.jpg 432w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u2022 Maureen Dowd and Ann Coulter.\u00a0 Though political opposites, they reside on two sides of the same snarky coin.\u00a0 They never seem to tire of voicing their gray, cynical negativity.\u00a0 One difference between them is that I once enjoyed reading Maureen Dowd.\u00a0 The other is that Ann Coulter traps and eats children.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Our Artsy-Fartsy Line-of-the-Week award goes to Chrstine Aiken of Asheville Aerial Arts, as quoted in <em>The Laurel of Asheville<\/em>, September 2016:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Each piece addresses a transformation such as captive\/free, dreaming\/awake, same\/different, grounded\/flying, etc.\u00a0 It is all about embracing and celebrating the inevitable changes that infiltrate our lifetimes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Honorable mention goes to painter Deanna Chilian, as quoted in the very same magazine:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>I began going crazy with color, first infusing it into quasi-abstracted landscapes I painted when I lived in Colorado.\u00a0 Then came steps into leaving behind material representation altogether &#8212; then more discernment and sophistication in my palette.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The reason that eating corn-on-the-cob is so much better than other ways to eat corn is because the gnashing of our incisors reconnects us with our inner cave-person.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/this-nickel.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-14141 size-medium\" style=\"margin-left: 8px;\" title=\"A Nickel from UNICEF\" src=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/this-nickel-300x185.jpg\" alt=\"Nickel from UNICEF\" width=\"300\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/this-nickel-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/this-nickel-640x395.jpg 640w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/this-nickel.jpg 972w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u2022 I have concerns about Target MarkeTeam, the firm that does direct-mail marketing for UNICEF as well as charities such as CARE and The Humane Society.\u00a0 UNICEF just sent me <a href=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/this-nickel.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this envelope<\/a>, with a nickel glued inside, bearing the message &#8220;This nickel could save a child&#8217;s life!&#8221;\u00a0 Wow!\u00a0 To think they would entrust a child&#8217;s fate to the US Postal Service!<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Every second that you and I are alive, <a href=\"http:\/\/timeblimp.com\/?page_id=1033\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one hundred trillion neutrinos<\/a> from the depths of the universe pass through our bodies.\u00a0 I have no idea what these damn neutrinos may or may not do to us, but it&#8217;s no wonder we only live to be eighty, and that&#8217;s if we&#8217;re lucky.\u00a0 Damn neutrinos.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 North Washington is 82 miles north of Washington, PA.\u00a0 West Liberty is 52 miles north of East Liberty, PA.\u00a0 Berlin is 123 miles west of East Berlin, PA.\u00a0 Weston is 62 miles west of Easton, PA.\u00a0 North Branch is 102 miles east of West Branch, PA.\u00a0 Centerville is 134 miles south (or north, take your pick) of the other Centerville, PA, and both Centervilles happen to be 230 miles more-or-less west of Centralia, PA.\u00a0 If you are planning to visit any of these Pennsylvania towns, pack a compass, and a lunch.<\/p>\n<pre style=\"padding: 0px; They haven't worked for me in years.\r\n   <em>Lucy<\/em>:     Haah? \r\n   <em>Ricky<\/em>:    They couldn't do the rhumba -- I had to fire them!\r\n   <em>Lucy<\/em>:     Ricky, do you know what neutrinos are?\r\n   <em>Ricky<\/em>:    All I know is they are no good.\r\n   <em>Lucy<\/em>:     Well... I just read... just a minute ago... that we... waaahhh! <em>WAAAAAHHHH<\/em>!\r\n   <em style=\"line-height: 32px;\">[Just then, Fred and Ethel enter the apartment.]<\/em>\r\n   <em>Fred<\/em>:     What's all the wailing about? Did the washing machine break?\r\n   <em>Ricky<\/em>:    Ay-ay-ay!  Lucy seems to be upset about The Neutrinos. I told her... \r\n   <em>Lucy<\/em>:     Waaahhh!\r\n   <em>Fred<\/em>:     The Neutrinos?  They stunk!\r\n   <em>Ethel:<\/em>    Gee, I kinda liked them.  Sort of... penetrating.  All over my body!\r\n   <em style=\"line-height: 32px;\">[Fred and Ricky, mouths agape, raise their eyebrows and stare at each other.]\r\n<\/em>   <em>Fred<\/em>:     Ethel, we better beat it.  This is the Fifties. \r\n   <em>Ricky<\/em>:   Vamos, Fred.
