{"id":13581,"date":"2016-07-04T06:24:49","date_gmt":"2016-07-04T10:24:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/?p=13581"},"modified":"2022-08-01T07:43:00","modified_gmt":"2022-08-01T11:43:00","slug":"journey-to-planet-honeydew","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/2016\/07\/journey-to-planet-honeydew\/","title":{"rendered":"Journey to Planet Honeydew"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was four years, eleven months and three days ago that, unbeknownst to our neighbors (since our homeowners association would have said no), I launched into space my satellite <em>SamanthaBee<\/em>, whose five-year mission would be the flyby and Instagram photo-slam of the all-but-forgotten planet Honeydew.<\/p>\n<p>I am pleased to announce that today, quietly, without all the fanfare of the <em>Juno<\/em> mission, <em>SamanthaBee<\/em> has entered the aurasphere of Honeydew and transmitted the first data ever from this sweet planet, which I am privileged to share with you on this very special day in our nation.<\/p>\n<p>As it turns out, Honeydew is quite similar to the fifth planet in our solar system, Jupiter,\u00a0 but there are several fascinating differences\u00a0(see artist&#8217;s rendition below).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/honeydew.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13585 size-full\" style=\"margin-bottom: 30px;\" title=\"Cutaway View of Planets Jupiter and Honeydew\" src=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/honeydew.jpg\" alt=\"Cutaway View of Planets Jupiter and Honeydew\" width=\"600\" height=\"474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/honeydew.jpg 600w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/honeydew-300x237.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>First, spectrophotometers on <em>SamanthaBee<\/em> have detected a fruity aura around Honeydew, comprised of aromatic compounds that only an organic chemist or Christian Dior janitor would be able to identify.\u00a0 No such scent emanates from the surface of Jupiter, which some attribute to the powerful odor-fighting protection of Right Guard.\u2122<\/p>\n<p>Both Jupiter and Honeydew have outer rinds.\u00a0 Scientists speculate that these rinds evolved to conceal the planet&#8217;s edible (and delicious) interior from hungry interstellar predators.\u00a0 This adaptation has enabled the planets to survive for over five billion years, and without costly refrigeration.<\/p>\n<p>Instrument readings by <em>SamanthaBee<\/em> suggest that the Edible Region of Honeydew serves only eight to ten, whereas that of Jupiter can feed several thousands.\u00a0 Noted astronomers and Golden Corral salad bar attendants who I consulted for this post found this surprising, because in their experience, they never seem to run out of honeydew.\u00a0 We will have to wait for a future mission to clear up this mystery.<\/p>\n<p>Every planet &#8212; even Earth! &#8212; has icky stuff inside that it is ashamed of and wants to hide.\u00a0 In the case of Honeydew, <em>SamanthaBee <\/em>has discovered that the planet has a slimy glop of seeds and connective fibers in its interior, which could be the burned-out remnants of primordial supernovae or, as some recently posited, the place where pumpkins go to die.\u00a0 Jupiter, by contrast, does not have a well-defined locus of shame but just a brownish-gray decayed center that no explorer with any decency should probe very deeply.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the seismic data I just received from <em>SamanthaBee<\/em> has confirmed that Honeydew has no pit.\u00a0 This is another point of difference with Jupiter, whose pit is roughly the size of eleven hundred trillion avocados.\u00a0 Holy guacamole!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/gary-spivey-press-photo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-13598\" style=\"border: 1px solid #000000; width: 135px;\" title=\"Psychic Gary Spivey\" src=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/gary-spivey-press-photo-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Psychic Gary Spivey\" width=\"135\" height=\"110\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/gary-spivey-press-photo-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/gary-spivey-press-photo-640x521.jpg 640w, https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/gary-spivey-press-photo.jpg 1327w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 135px) 100vw, 135px\" \/><\/a>There are sure to be more jaw-dropping findings as <em>SamanthaBee<\/em> continues its mission.\u00a0 After completing its flyby of Honeydew, <em>SamanthaBee<\/em> will travel onward to the outermost reaches of the Melon System, where it will attempt to make contact with psychic Gary Spivey (press photo at right).\u00a0 I will keep my readers informed.
