{"id":10452,"date":"2015-03-26T19:02:44","date_gmt":"2015-03-26T23:02:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/?p=10452"},"modified":"2022-08-01T07:43:04","modified_gmt":"2022-08-01T11:43:04","slug":"arrogance-attitude-accidents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/2015\/03\/arrogance-attitude-accidents\/","title":{"rendered":"Arrogance + Attitude = Accidents"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_10532\" style=\"width: 241px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/spohr155.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10532\" class=\"wp-image-10532 size-full\" style=\"margin-top: 4px;\" src=\"http:\/\/chcollins.com\/100Billion\/wp-content\/uploads\/spohr155.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"155\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10532\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;I wish you understood my German&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This morning, executives from Lufthansa, parent company of Germanwings, held a press conference to respond to evidence that one of their pilots deliberately crashed Flight 9525 into the French Alps.\u00a0 The press conference was conducted almost entirely\u00a0 in German &#8212; a live English translation was provided for television.\u00a0 I watched the event on MSNBC.<\/p>\n<p>I was steamed as I watched and listened to the following exchange between Katy Tur of NBC News and Carsten Spohr, CEO of Lufthansa.\u00a0 (MSNBC posted a clip of it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/jose-diaz-balart\/watch\/lufthansa-ceo---firm-confidence--in-pilots-418504771845\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">TUR:<em> Katy Tur, NBC News.\u00a0 Apologies if you&#8217;ve already answered this, but are there regulations where a flight attendant has to be in the cockpit if a pilot, uh, has a bathroom break or goes to get a coffee?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">SPOHR (giving his first English-language response): <em>Well, there is <\/em>[sic]<em> regulations <span style=\"color: #800080;\">in <span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">some<\/span> parts of the world<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #800080;\"> including the one I assume you are coming from<\/span>, the U.S., but only a small number of airlines in Europe, as far as I know, no, but <\/em>[?]<em> airline at all, for sure, <span style=\"color: #800080;\">none of the big airlines we work with.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">TUR: <em>Are you going to do that in the future?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">SPOHR:<em>\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #800080;\">I don&#8217;t see any need to change our procedures at this very point<\/span>, I think it&#8217;s this mis<\/em> [?] <em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">single occasion<\/span>, but <span style=\"color: #800080;\">as I mentioned before in German<\/span>, we will get together with the various experts in the Lufthansa group airlines, in the authorities, with our German government, to see <span style=\"color: #800080;\">if our procedures can be refined<\/span>.\u00a0 I think we should not now jump into short notice activities, we rather should refrain from that and make analysis first.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">TUR: <em>So you are confident in your pilots?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">SPOHR:\u00a0 <em><span style=\"color: #800080;\">I wish you understood my German because I&#8217;ve said twice<\/span>, and I repeat it in English, without any doubt.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #800080;\">My firm confidence<\/span> in the selection of our pilots, in the training of our pilots, in the qualification of our pilots, in the work of our pilots, <span style=\"color: #800080;\">has not been touched by this single tragedy<\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I have highlighted what I think are Spohr&#8217;s off-putting and superior-sounding remarks, for the reader&#8217;s benefit.\u00a0 You can watch the clip and decide for yourself.<\/p>\n<p>The clip does not show this, but the question right after Katy Tur&#8217;s was from another English-speaking reporter, who asked <em>Herr Firmenboss<\/em> Spohr to answer in English.\u00a0 Spohr did not pause a second before launching into a German-language response.<\/p>\n<p>We have seen this attitude before.\u00a0 We saw it from NASA after the Challenger shuttle disaster.\u00a0 We saw it from George W.
