Bluebirds
Bluebirds
visited the feeder,
looking curious as to
what's to eat here,
but seeing only seeds
flew off

    and seeing dried mealworms
    ate lustily

    Ethical dilemma.
BULLFINCHES, two pairs, are eating at my feeder. One of our most handsome and bright birds, they are lovely to watch – and scarce. But they nibble off, and often discard, every bud from fruit trees. Their beaks are exquisitely designed for this. Where I was brought up in Sussex, then a main apple-growing area, they were trapped and killed – a premium on their heads.
I have 9 apple trees, 4 plums, two pears.
Can I convince myself that by feeding them I am keeping them from the trees 50 yards away? Repel them by some means? Hire a hawk? Plant more trees to satisfy the needs?
